Greece in USA hosts Mark Borden

Library Residency Artist in Residence Mark Borden—writer, multidisciplinary creator, and cultural investigator—explored Athens’ historic landmarks, deepening his research at the intersection of ancient and contemporary storytelling.

At the Acropolis Museum, he explored the Parthenon Marbles enigma (see Connelly) and the museum’s innovative architectural design by @bernard.tschumi , which mirrors the sacred rock above. The exhibits—from the Archaic Gallery’s korai statues to the Parthenon Gallery’s metopes – provided a tangible connection to classical narratives.

At the Herodion (Odeon of Herodes Atticus), Borden observed how this 2nd-century Roman theater – originally built for musical performances—still hosts contemporary productions, from opera to music and theater, bridging antiquity with today’s artistic expressions. Though it postdates the era of Aeschylus and Sophocles, its enduring role as a cultural stage resonates with his own explorations of myth, adaptation, and performance.

For an artist who bridges Shakespearean drama, West Coast minimalism, and avant-garde storytelling, the Acropolis was a sublime experience.
