Greece in USA at The Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York

Greece in USA is pleased to collaborate with Spanish artist Joan Bofill for the  exhibition:
JOAN BOFILL · DOUBLE PORTRAIT

Curated by Carlo McCormick

Bofill’s practice emerges from a deep curiosity about people. It was while making a documentary on Raymond Roussel and working on a film about producer Stuart Cornfeld, that he began his ongoing project Double Portrait. The project’s captivating double portrait of David Lynch is a quintessential example of his approach. From those first encounters with filmmakers, his work evolved into an exploration of observation, listening, & the act of tracing a line —a practice that moves between documentary cinema & a cabinet of curiosities made of encounters.
For Bofill, each work is more than an image: it is the testimony of a meeting, a search for truth, and a connection with the person portrayed. The exhibition will not only feature portraits but also works that shift between abstraction & figuration —pieces that arise from the same encounters and enter into dialogue with the portraits, expanding the scope of the project.
Over time, Bofill has portrayed filmmakers such as David Lynch, Cronenberg, Guillermo del Toro, & Mel Brooks; artists like Jan Švankmajer, Joe Coleman, Robert Williams, and Antonio López; & writers & poets including Michel Butor, George Saunders, and Armando Valladares.

We cannot imagine a more ideal setting than the hallowed halls of the Angel Orensanz Foundation. Once the largest synagogue in America, this breathtaking National Historic Landmark is now a sanctuary for contemporary art, founded by the renowned Spanish sculptor Angel Orensanz. Its atmospheric grandeur and legacy of artistic innovation provide a powerful dialogue with Joan Bofill’s work.
